Display Recent Projects using Recent Posts format

Using the Recent Posts carousel, I need to posts recent portfolio items, I realize there is a carousel for recent projects but I need to use the same look i.e. a slider for projects. I tried to filter the Recent Posts carousel by Category Slugs of portfolio filters with no luck, is this not possible?

To clarify, I have portfolio filter labelled with the category slug of “public-sector” so I tried to filter the recent posts carousel using “public-sector” category, but nothing showed up. Is there a way to achieve this?
