Using an excerpt on Recent posts carousel

I’m using visual composer on posts but when using the Recent posts carousel the description comes up with the Visual composer code [vc_row….etc rather than the text. I’ve added a short excerpt on the post but this isn’t displayed. How can we make is to the custom excerpt is used instead?
