Important Update Informations
To all users that upgrade to the latest version of Unicon 2.6. This is a MAJOR release with elementary changes. Please take a moment to read through the following changes carefully before updating.
Over the past few months, Unicon has been rebuilt completely to perform to the standards of the new Envato requirements. You can read more about that here: https://help.author.envato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000472383-WordPress-Theme-Requirements
Plugin Territory Functionality
Envato is now enforcing the separation of theme functionality and plugin functionality. That means that some parts of the core files of Unicon are now part of installable plugins that you need to activate to keep your site running.
There are two plugins that are now required:
– WPBakery Page Builder (formerly known as Visual Composer)
The famous Page Builder Plugin. This plugin was also required before.– Unicon Core Plugin
The new Unicon Core Plugin now contains all shortcodes, metaboxes, and custom visual composer elements. If you did not modify Unicon in a child theme, once you activate these needed plugins there
should be nothing left to do besides probably clearing your cache. After updating the main
theme files you can can install and activate the plugins under Appearance > Install Plugins. The following Plugins are optionally:
– Unicon Demo Importer
This Plugin is mainly for new installations. This plugin lets you import the demo content.– Unicon Portfolio CPT
This Plugin exists since the release of Unicon and adds the Portfolio Custom Post Type.– Unicon Widgets
All Unicon Widgets are now shifted into that Plugin.
Structural Changes
This applies to all heavy customizers who are using a child theme with modifications beyond CSS. If you are using a child theme and/or have customized core files of Unicon you might have overwritten files that are now in a different folder structure or excluded into a plugin.
– /framework/inc/shortcodes.php is now part of the “Unicon Core Plugin”
– /framework/inc/meta-box/ is now part of the “Unicon Core Plugin”
– /framework/inc/tinymce/ is now part of the “Unicon Core Plugin”
– /framework/inc/visualcomposer/ is now part of the “Unicon Core Plugin”
– /framework/inc/widgets/ is now part of the “Unicon Widgets Plugin”
– /framework/inc/demoimporter/ is now part of the “Unicon Demoimporter Plugin”The shortcodes.css and functions.js are still part of the Unicon theme files.
How to update
Step 1: Install the theme. Copy & paste the new “unicon” folder from the Themes folder you’ve downloaded on Themeforest in wp-content/themes/ and completely overwrite the old “unicon” folder. Make sure to save your translation files before overriding.
Step 2: Login to your WordPress Backend
Step 3: After the installation and activation of the theme go to Appearance > Install Plugins and make sure to install the required Plugins. If you want to install the plugins manually (via FTP) you can find them in the Unicon theme folder under /framework/plugins/. The following plugins are required:
– WPBakery Page Builder (formerly known as Visual Composer)
– Unicon Core PluginStep 4: Clear your cache. If you have any cache plugins active, they need to be cleared after updating, since many files have changed. Also make sure to clear your browser cache.
We are happy to announce this update and hope you are as excited as we are. As always, if you have any questions, just reach out to us here in the support forums. 🙂
