Column Gap and Text Overlay

I’m trying to achieve a 2-column layout with background images that include text overlays. I’m having difficulty adjusting the column gap since the option is not available in Unicon’s version of Visual Composer. I tried a row with 2 columns and a row with a 2-column inner row. The latter gave me column design options for padding, etc., but that didn’t affect the column gap at all.

What would you recommend is the easiest way to achieve the layout and design (see attached image)?
